SGGW Senate, the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Statistics was resolved and two independent departments: Department of Econometrics and Informatics and the Department of Applied Mathematics was established.

The Department of Econometrics and Informatics incorporated into the Faculty of Agricultural Economics (current Faculty of Economic Sciences). The creator of the Department was professor T. Marszałkowicz, who served as head of the Department of Econometrics and Informatics in the years 1986 – 1992. In the years 1993 -1999 Department was headed by prof. Bolesław Borkowski and in the years 2000 – 2005 – Associate professor Zbigniew Binderman.

In the meantime, on 24^th of January 2001 the Inter-Faculty Study of Informatics and Econometrics was established (The Study later transformed into the Faculty of Applied Informatics and Mathematics). The basic teaching staff of the Study were employees of the Department of Econometrics and Informatics. The head of Inter-Faculty Study was professor Bolesław Borkowski.

In 2006, the Department of Econometrics and Informatics was divided, what has resulting in the formation of two new departments: Department of Econometrics and Statistics and Department of Informatics. The function of Head of the Department of Econometrics and Statistics embraced associate professor Zbigniew Binderman.

In 2007 the Inter- Faculty Study of Informatics and Econometrics activity has been terminated.

On January 1^st 2008, mainly on the basis of the Department of Econometrics and Statistics, Department of Informatics and the Computer Laboratory the Faculty of Applied Informatics and Mathematics was created. The first Dean of the new Faculty was Professor Bolesław Borkowski (Department of Econometrics and Statistics), who served this function in the years 2008-2012.

The Head of the Department of Econometrics and Statistics at the Faculty of Applied Informatics and Mathematics in the years 2007 – 2012 was still associate professor Zbigniew Binderman.
In the years 2013 – 2016 the head of the Department was Grzegorz Koszela, PhD.
In the years 2017 – 2019 the head of the Department was Andrzej Karpio, PhD.
In the years 2019 – 2020 the head of the Department was Joanna Kisielińska, associate professor.

From 1 January 2021 the head of the Department is Joanna Landmesser – Rusek, associate professor.
